Scrub Nurse Ophthalmology

As the leading medical recruitment agency in South Africa, our client has an exciting opportunity for a Scrub Nurse - Ophthalmology to be based in Fordsburg, Johannesburg.

The opportunity

In this specialist theatre role, you’ll support ophthalmic procedures (including cataract, glaucoma, vitrectomy and corneal work), ensuring flawless sterile technique, accurate counts, and seamless assistance to the surgeon from wheels-in to wheels-out. 

Key responsibilities

• Prepare theatre, instruments, and consumables for ophthalmic surgery. 

• Scrub in and maintain aseptic technique throughout all procedures. 

• Anticipate and assist the surgeon with precise instrumentation and equipment handling. 

• Perform and document accurate swab, instrument, and needle counts; record implant details (e.g., IOLs). 

• Uphold infection prevention and patient safety standards at all times. 

Requirements

• Registered Nurse with current SANC registration. 

• Post-basic in Operating Room Nursing advantageous. 

• 3–5+ years’ operating theatre experience with strong Ophthalmology exposure. 

• Excellent knowledge of ophthalmic instruments, sterile protocols, and infection control; calm under pressure.
